Tomorrow’s match up against the Air Force Falcons is extremely pivotal for the Pokes. I’d almost call it a must win. One stat that quickly stands out about this game is rushing yards. Guess who leads the nation? That’s right…Air Force. They are averaging 399 yds/game on the ground this season. Combine that with a defense that has had some issues tackling this year and it could equate to big trouble for the Pokes. If the Cowboys have any chance of pulling this one out tomorrow they will need to put points on the board every opportunity they have. Last year, if you recall, they failed to do so losing 10-0. Here are a few reasons I believe the Pokes will play well tomorrow and steal a win:
Sure, the Cowboys have had some problems this year with tackling. The first game against Southern Utah they missed 28 tackles. The following two weeks they also missed tackles. But let’s remember, those games were against the #3 and #5 ranked teams in the country! With an option attack like Air Force it is extremely important for the secondary to come up and make tackles or it will be a long day. Well, Wyoming’s secondary saw this Air Force option offense last year as they are all returning starters. That, combined with the Pokes defenders each having specific assignments will help the secondary focus, allowing them to stay alert and make plays. There was a lot of talk of how quick and talented this secondary was in fall camp. It’s time for them to step up and show it.
As you know, Austyn Carta-Samuels came in as a true freshman last season and took over the starting role at QB. The game in Colorado Springs against this Air Force team was his first loss as a collegiate quarterback and he took a beating. He still has a bad taste in his mouth from that one. ACS will be playing with an extra chip on this shoulder tomorrow, admittedly or not.
