Former University of Wyoming Athletics Director and football coach Paul Roach recently sat down with Wyoming Athletics to discuss special times in his career when he was at Wyoming. Roach is the only man in University of Wyoming history to serve in the dual capacity of athletics director and head football coach. During his time as head football coach of the Pokes, Roach led the Cowboys to back-to-back WAC Championships in 1987 and 1988 going undefeated in league play during both seasons. Those seasons were good enough to earn him WAC Coach of the Year honors for both seasons. Roach led the Cowboys to three bowl games as head coach, the Holiday Bowl in ’87 and ’88 and the Copper Bowl in ’90. Not to shabby, considering the Cowboys have only made twelve bowl appearances in its history. Roach was inducted into the UW Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999.
In the video Roach talks about the only championship game ever played at the War and the first night game ever played at the War. This is pretty interesting because the Pokes will play two night games at home this year as part of the 2010 schedule. The first game of the season against Southern Utah will kickoff at 7 p.m. and the Boise State game on September 18th has a kickoff time set for 6 p.m. The homecoming game versus Utah has an unusually late start time also – set for 4 p.m. kickoff.
